“I shot this picture almost ten years ago, just about the time when it was obvious to me that a war — a real one fought between armies — was over. Dead bodies were all around the road to Baghdad. Who is the person in the picture that I took from atop an armored vehicle carrying U.S. Marines towards the Iraqi capital? I don’t know. Not far from this man, there was the wreckage of a truck hit by something powerful. More bodies around, in different positions. All dead.
It immediately got lost, the photo itself, amongst others full of emotions, blood and military action illustrating what would be celebrated as the liberation of a country from a tyrant. Somewhere near Nassiriya, this man was left to rot under the desert sun — and forgotten on my hard drive. Not long after, I realized that was probably my best frame from the short and bloody desert rally – a simple but powerful picture of an unknown man “of military age” killed and left in an ugly landscape among tank trails, surrounded by nothing but dust and the noise of war. After all, this is how I see the whole war thing – a dirty nightmare and ugly emptiness you are alone in. Dead or still alive, but alone.”

Early in the sweltering morning of June 28, 1969, a group of Greenwich Village policeman entered the Stonewall Inn and announced they were taking over the place. Accounts of what happened next are disputed, but things did not go as planned. Over the next few hours, 14 people were arrested, four police injured, the bar’s interior demolished, and what was once a hotspot for cross-dressers and the bi-curious had become a Gay Rights mecca, forever known as Stonewall. Hit The Wall recently opened at the Barrow Street Theatre in the West Village, almost across the street from where the events in question took place. The show takes few sides, spinning contrasting narratives that are political, personal, crushing, redeeming, and empowering to examine the literal and figurative boundaries of race, class, sex, storytelling, and the stage itself. Special props go to music director Dan Lipton, who researched everything from 1969’s make of Stratocaster to the records on Stonewall’s jukebox. The result is a score that embraces everything from Hendrix’s mythical sound to the clacking of a street kid’s bongos, both psychedelic and primal, fun yet urgent, and above all, aware. How is it that a 15-year-old in Newark who the country labels worthless to the economy, who has no hope of getting a job or affording college, can suddenly generate 20,000 to 30,000 dollars a year once trapped in the criminal justice system? The expansion of prisons, parole, probation, the court and police systems has resulted in an enormous bureaucracy which has been a boon to everyone from architects to food vendors—all with one thing in common, a paycheck earned by keeping human beings in cages. The criminalization of poverty is a lucrative business, and we have replaced the social safety net with a dragnet.”
